Project Description & Work Performed:
This project involved demolition and replacement of 4,038 linear feet of floodwall damaged by Hurricane Katrina and Rita. Construction on the wall had to be completed prior to the upcoming hurricane season (June 1, 2006) Cajun’s Deep Foundation Group scope included:
Battered H-Piles, Sheet Piles, and Uplift Connectors.
Securing, coating and transporting all H-pile and sheeting material to the site
Unloading and placement of material along the floodwall right awayDriven piling: 2,250 steel H-piles (73’ and 80’ lengths), 57,000 SF of steel sheet pile

Challenges:
  • The project dictated an extremely tight deadline and required a rapid mobilization due to the requirement of completion prior to the following hurricane season.
  • The fast-paced schedule required a large workforce in a relatively small work area, causing numerous congestion and coordination issues.
  • The project was very high-profile with a constant flow of media and public officials visiting the site. This presented challenges in maintaining productivity, while providing access to these parties.
  • Significant changes/increases to the scope of work were made shortly after award, which required Cajun to adapt to a new schedule and devise a new plan of work.
  • Lack of utilities (sewer, water, telephone) posed infrastructure and communication problems.
Key Accomplishments:
  • Successfully completed the floodwall on time and before June 1, 2006 deadline.
  • Awarded the ABC Pelican Chapter 2006 Award for Excellence in Construction in the Infrastructure/Heavy Construction category.
  • Awarded ABC National Eagle Award in the Infrastructure/Heavy Construction Category.
  • Project principals had the rare and distinct honor of being coined by Brigadier General Robert Crear, Commander of the Mississippi Valley Division, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
  • President George Bush visited and held a press conference from this project site giving a personal “thanks” to all employees involved.
