Project Description & Work Performed
The project consisted of the construction of a raw water intake structure and pump station. Cajun’s scope included:
  • Creation of a 20’ diameter shaft, 140’ deep in solid rock, three 42” intake tunnels bored through solid rock into a lake at varying depths, and lining the shaft with concrete.
  • Installation of four 3,500 GPM vertical turbine pumps with 800 HP motors, 3,100 LF of 36” raw water pipeline, structural concrete base, elevated slabs and walls.
  • Installation of over 3,100 LF of 36” ductile iron for raw water pipeline.
  • Installation of approximately 1,600 CY of structure concrete.
  • Installation of 80 tons of reinforcing steel.
  • Installation of four 150’ long vertical turbine pumps.
  • Underwater marine work included: the retrieval of a tunnel boring machine and installation of intake tunnel grate.
  • Installation of 22,500 SF of new asphalt paving.
  • Construction of pump station building over shaft.
  • Importing of top soil, hydro-seeding and maintenance of site.
  • Working safely during construction of the 160’ deep shaft, including blasting operations.
  • The fast-paced schedule required Cajun to perform several redesigns of the building to allow shaft construction while the base slab, elevated slab and CMU walls were constructed.
  • Working in a confined area bordered by a Corps park and private land on either side.
  • Installing a 150’ long pump assembly.
  • Blasting operations to excavate for deep shaft.
Key Accomplishments:
  • Project was completed on time and under budget with 34,226 man-hours worked with no lost time due to accident or injury.
